PalomaRao-Carat-LaneCarat Lane in its first event marking the launch of its Women Of Mettle program announced 10 women achievers from Chennai as brand consuls to ‘inspire, aspire and enlighten many more’. The list included yours truly, along with Squash Champ Dipika Pallikal, Dr. Priya Selvaraj, designer Shilpa Vummuti and RJ Sanobar Sultana, as we indulged in afternoon of girl bonding and lots of photo taking. But coming back to the most important part of all of this- the beautiful jewellery.

Let me first start by saying what it is that makes Carat Lane so appealing to me. I love how they’ve changed the whole perception of the word jewellery. What was once (and often still can be) a big scary daunting word, is now a much more approachable one. Young men can find the perfect engagement ring without the stress that goes with it, and us women can actually wear the jewellery that we buy, instead of letting it languish in a locker somewhere, as is mostly the case. Just a quick look at what they have to offer, and you’ll see what I mean.

Our group of ladies may have been a diverse one, but each of us managed to find pieces that suited our tastes and sensibilities. I for one was in love with the delicate ‘Gold Lace’ collection, featuring beautifully crafted floral motifs that you can pretty much wear with anything. On the other hand Dipika went for a single strand diamond necklace and equally bling dangly earrings. And the best part is, because of the more neutral aesthetic of the brand, you can mix and match pieces, or go for the stacked look that’s so on trend right now. I chose the subtle route that evening because I didn’t want my dress and jewellery competing with each other, but I definitely want to wear a bunch of their bangle-bracelets, alongside my watch, all at once. Gypsy-chic-glam, that’s what I’m going to call it.

Now that we’ve whet your appetite, drop by the store on Khadar Nawaz Khan road and try on a few of their beautiful baubles, or visit their website, which by the way is India’s largest online jewellery destination. And as I said earlier, these pieces are meant to be enjoyed and worn, not put away. So here’s to the Carat lane muse, the new-age woman. Here’s to us.
