So far there seem to be no signs of the so called ‘summer slump’, where as the temperatures rise, the social scene starts to slow down, with everyone making a mad dash for cooler weather. Don’t get me wrong, there are definitely holiday plans on the charts, and most certainly ones that include high altitudes and low temperatures, but for now we’re not complaining. Keeping the summery vibe going was the launch party of the Holiday Inn Chennai OMR on Friday, where guests were invited to check out the brand new property. Instead of restricting the fun to the ballroom, activities were spread out across various levels of the hotel. From wheel of fortune style games, to a selfie mirror wall, to an interactive giant screen that you could slingshot your messages onto. My favourite would have to be the crazy scientist’s laboratory where the star of the show was the liquid nitrogen, allowing for some pretty cool stuff, pun intended. Plus I’m not one to turn down delicious frozen desserts.

The rest of the week saw most of Chennai’s popular faces outdoors, for various Earth Day initiatives around the city and along the coast. One batch was at Besant Nagar beach for the Turtle release by Save The Turtle, where after two months of loving care by the volunteers, the Olive Ridleys were ready to be released into the sea. Most everyone had their little ones in tow to experience a one-of-a-kind sunset, watching the baby turtles make their way to the water. Another batch of people landed up at Surf Turf for a special Earth Day trail in association with Ocean Delight Surf School. After a quick chat on marine life and recycling strategies, the group set off to the Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute to visit the lobster farm, ending with a beach clean up at Kovalam. It was great to see the locals involved as well, with the kids most excited about posing for pictures with the poster. Back at Covelong Point some of the squad took the opportunity to cool off in the water, taking the kayaks out for a quick lesson. Others chose to reward themselves with a nice meal and some doggy company.
